Thaal

A thaal has always served two purposes in South Asian homes — a serving vessel at the table and, when not in use, a decorative piece on the wall. Ours are hand-painted silver-toned metal, 12 inches in circumference, designed from the start to move between those two roles rather than being built purely for one or the other.

As a serving piece, the size and shallow shape suit sweets, dry fruit, or small snacks laid out for guests — not a full meal, but exactly the kind of spread that comes out during a family gathering, Eid, or when guests drop by unannounced. As a wall piece, the same thaal hangs flat, letting the hand-painted design function as a small piece of framed-looking art without an actual frame.

Because these are hand-painted rather than machine-printed, expect the kind of small variation in brushwork that comes with genuine handwork — each thaal is close to its listing photo but not machine-identical to it, which is part of what separates it from a printed metal tray.
